Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Many professions have a requirement on their members for Continuing Professional Development (CPD), in order to keep up-to-date with trends and changing dynamics after the intense qualification period. They are also increasingly emphasising the importance of lifelong learning, and encouraging consideration of our ongoing development in a broader context i.e. less about meeting an explicit annual requirement, and more about ensuring we remain relevant as professionals and grow our understanding over our careers. In this respect, some have adapted their guidelines from time-based systems to outcomes-based systems. CPD can include:
Some professions are using an approach referred to as "reflective practice discussions" and/or "diffraction discussions" where each professional reflects on their own development needs, and discusses them with another professional who understands the nature of work, their development objectives, and their learning outcomes. A number of our mentors, especially those who are familiar with the professional context of your work, are able to act as a sounding board for these discussions, including sharing their own learning experiences, and challenging you in your ongoing growth & development.
- technical skills/knowledge
- professionalism
- behavioural & normative skills
- volunteering, including contributing to the success of the profession
